Tulips by Samuel Curtis (1779-1860) in Great Flower Books 1700-1900. British horticulturist Samuel Curtis was cousin to William Curtis, founder of “The Botanical Magazine”, forerunner to the “Curtis Botanical Magazine,” the indisputable parent of all botanical and gardening magazines that exist today. Samuel became editor and sole proprietor of the magazine in 1827 and was joined by four of his daughters, all accomplished artists, who helped him with illustrations. Samuel pushed British botanical boundaries with his Tropical Garden of La Chaire on the Isle of Jersey, in which he raised possibly the greatest diversity of subtropical plants of any British garden before or since.
