Despite Buddhism’s dissemination, its teachings were not systematized and, with the passage of time, a great deal of doctrinal confusion set in. By the sixth century, 10 major schools of Buddhist thought were established, each claiming to adhere to Shakyamuni’s true teaching. This image shows pages from an early Buddhist work, titled Maka Shikan Kage, by the monk Zhi Yi (538-597).
