Toni Onley had to set his art aside for teaching jobs to support his family in the 1950s and early 60s, pursuing his own art only when time permitted. Yet what he produced attracted the attention of international art critics. By the mid-1960s, his work was on display at the Tate Gallery in London, he had painted a 300-square-foot mural for the Queen Elizabeth Playhouse in Vancouver and he had won numerous awards including the Royal Canadian Academy Zacks Award. Made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1999, Onley is recognized today as one of Canada’s foremost landscape artists.
